The following is my comment to a post from Joseph Spurgeon, pastor of Sovereign King Church in Indiana. There’s a semantics game that’s being played with Partial Preterists that should be discussed as it concerns using the terminology “Old Covenant Order” or “Old Covenant Age, World, System, Kingdom, and Creation”. Here’s my comment…
Joseph Spurgeon, You’re using the terms “covenantal judgment” and “Old Covenant order”. There are no such teachings that point to these terms being applied to AD 70. There is no “Covenantal Judgment” in AD 70 – as if this is a formal doctrine that Jesus or Paul espoused and said would happen in their generation. It’s not a thing that’s a formal doctrine.
Furthermore, there’s no “Old Covenant order” that was “completed” in AD 70. This is as extra-biblical as it gets. This suggests that there was a “40 year transition process or period” where Israel’s Old Covenant was in effect and on it’s way out for 40 years after the cross.
In Covenant Eschatology Full Preterism (Max King, Don Preston, William Bell, Ed Stevens, etc.), they use the terms “Old Covenant Age, World, Order, System, Kingdom, and Creation”. They TOO say this alleged “Old Covenant Order” came to an end in AD 70. Hmmm! They say that “The Old Covenant Age, World, Order, etc.” was in the process of fading away for 40 years, while the “The New Covenant Age, World, Order, etc.” began in ca. AD 30 but wasn’t fully consummated until AD 70 – which is when they say “the second coming of Christ” (how they heretically define it) took place.
Now, this is no different than Partial Preterist – except the Partial Preterist says the second coming of Christ didn’t happen in the first century.
Now here’s where things get real tricky… The Covenant Eschatology Full Preterism guys say that the alleged “Old Covenant Age, World, Order, Creation, etc.” was “The Old Heaven and Earth” that came to an end in AD 70. And they say that the alleged “New Covenant Age, World, Order, Creation, etc.” is “The New Heaven and Earth” that began in ca. AD 30 and was fully consummated in AD 70 when “The Old Heaven and Earth” came to “completion”. They teach a “40 year covenantal change and transition process” between the cross and AD 70.
Partial Preterists don’t want to be consistent in claiming an alleged “Old Covenant Age, World, Order, Creation, etc.” came to completion in AD 70. They don’t want to say this alleged “Old Covenant Age, World, Order, Creation, etc.” was The Old Heaven and Earth Age. If Partial Preterists came out and said this, it would mean that they are then Full Preterists – because Jesus comes back the second time at the end of The Old Heaven and Earth.
So what really is this “Old Covenant Order” that you speak of? “Order” is just another word for Age, World, System, Kingdom, and Creation. This “Old Covenant Age, World, Order, Creation, etc.” allegedly “coming to completion in AD 70” is EXACTLY what the Covenant Eschatology Full Preterism guys teach! So you’re 100% on board with them in this way! But you Partial Preterists say “No no no! This Old Covenant Age, World, Order, System, Kingdom, and Creation, is NOT The Old Heaven and Earth that came to completion in AD 70!”
HOWEVER! There are plenty of teachers today who claim Partial Preterism (or at least they say there not Full Preterists – they’d lose their jobs, influence, money, etc.) who claim that we’re already in The New Heavens and Earth Age!
So what I clearly see is a bunch of slick charlatans presenting and teaching Full Preterism under the disguise of Partial Preterism – and they would swear their life on saying they are absolutely not Full Preterists – but they really are if they were consistent. Partial Preterists want it both ways! They’re playing a semantics game!
There is no such thing as an “Old Covenant Age, World, Order, System, Kingdom, or Creation” in the Bible! AT ALL! It’s not there! It’s made up terminology! And this non-existent “order” most certainly did not “come to completion in AD 70”!
